The Bible In Belarusian

Aim of the project:

To turn the Belarusian people to God and unite the nation on the basis of the faith and national self-consciousness.

Project summary:

The Bible Society keeps working on the Bible in the Belarusian language. The translation is made from New Vulgate by Vladzislau Chernjavsky. It is going to be the first whole Bible in the modern Belarusian language translated from such an authoritative source.

The Belarusian poet Yanka Koupala who lived in the middle of the last century asked himself, "What does this huge mass of people want?" And he himself answered that question, "To be called a nation". But even today the Belarusians have found themselves as a nation in a lesser degree as compared with the others at the post-Soviet area. The decades spent under the reign of communism keep telling, and the faith that comes through the Word of God is the only thing that can help and save the Belarusians. Mainly because of mateial conditions, thus far our people have sadly received no opportunity to read the Bible in the native language. Issued in Toronto, the translation by A. Stankevich is not easily understandable by a modern Belarusian reader because of many historicisms and neologisms introduced by the author. Besides, this book is a bibliographical rarity. The translation made by V.Syomukha from the Synodal version bears all the mistakes of the Synodal text, and is often criticized, but even so it is impossible to get it.

Such are the circumstances in which the Bible Society is working on preparing the whole Bible in Belarusian for publishing. We are now in the process of revising the text and preparing it for making-up. A large group of scholars and believers of different denominatons is involved in the project. The translation is already checked against the source text. We intend to complete the work on the text and reference materials by May 2008.
The present need cannot be fully met by the funds allocated for the project, therefore we are open for any contributions in order to be able to reach more people with the Good News of mercy, hope and love.
