Children's recreation center "Hope"
Children’s recreation center “Hope” is a Belarusian-Germany Charity. It was found for children from the contaminated areas in Mogiliov and Gomel regions. The building is situated at the bank of the picturesque Vileyka water storage, Minsk region (photo, right).
The deputy director Vera Alexandrovna (photo, left) says,
“The center receives 272 kids at a time, their age ranging from 6 to 17. Each shift lasts for 24 days. We have 21 devoted teachers who serve the kids from their hearts. The children are carefully examined and undergo treatment and recreation courses according to their diagnosis. Now we Belarusians have entered the period when the distant consequences of the nuclear explosion in Chernobyl started telling. Thyroid body diseases are among the cases we diagnose very frequently, and in many cases surgery is the only effective way of saving child’s health. The children here have opportunities to study and to go in for sports. Speaking about interest toward spiritual matters, it is important to realize that children’s hearts are soft and easy accept God’s truths, and we are very thankful for this wonderful opportunity provided by the Bible Society. Among our staff members are the Orthodox and Catholic believers, and they will surely use the Bibles and other books when conducting studies.”
Vera Alexandrovna invited the children so that I might hand them the literature (photo, right). The kids were very glad: they all live in distant villages of the contaminated area, and have never seen such a variety of colorful books.
Sasha is 14 (photo, left). He came from the village of Kastjukouka, Gomel region. Pollution density there is 5ku/sq.km. All the children at that village have thyroid body disorders of different degree. The teacher who came with Sasha said that her five-years-old niece was very nervous, and when they examined her in the Gomel clinic it turned out to be that he’s got goiter.
Tanya is also 14 (photo, right), and she is from Kastjukouka, too. She came to the center for the second time. Happily her thyroid body is in normal condition, but the girl lives in a polluted area and her health state should be examined periodically.
As it turned out, a large group of 26 children with a teacher in charge came from Kastjukouka village. Considering the number of the children who concurrently stay at the center- 272 kids - much more literature is needed, all the more so that there are twelve shifts per year.
