Rehabilitation center in Mikhalkauskaya Rudnya

The Bible Society actively cooperates with church ministers of different Christian confessions who serve to the residents of the Chernobyl area. So at the village of Mikhalkauskaya Rudnya, a heavily polluted place in Gomel region, a rehabilitation center for drug addicts, alcoholics, and ex-convicts was founded. At the left photo there is the house rearranged for rehabilitation center.

What the locals and the authorities think of the center? The following is the excerpt from the Mozyr TV’ program. “The house #10 is famous throughout the village. Once an underworld hangout, it is now a house of exemplary order. Strict discipline and respect to one another reign here today. Those who had once used drugs and alcohol study the Bible and build their life in accordance with biblical commandments. At the present time there are 8 people here. They all came here voluntarily”

The comers have abandoned self-confidence and want to know God in order to have strength to lead a new life. This is why even at the entrance there are stones with the biblical passages carved on them: “You shall not tempt the Lord your God” and others (photo, right).

Dmitry (photo, left) the tutor of the center says, “I was the youngest child in the family and so I enjoyed special care and attention. When I grew up I became irresponsible. I married very young and quickly got divorced. It was when my fall began. I started drinking and stealing and in the result I was sentenced to five years of imprisonment. When in prison I met the believers who preached the Good News to the convicts. My heart was moved and I came to the faith. I firmly decided to turn over a new leaf when I get my liberty. But when I was free, I only managed to restrain myself for a short time. My former sinful habits prevailed, and I returned back to old life. It once happened that I met with an accident. My car crashed against a tree, but God saved my life. Once again I got in prison. There was not meaning of life to me, and thoughts about suicide came to my mind. And at this critical point of my life I met a believer who led me to the church of Evangelical Faith Christians. Our of despair I called to God for help. I repented and my life was radically transformed. Now I bear ministry to those whose condition I understand very well, because I had once been one of them. I am very thankful to the Bible Society for the literature they presented us with. These books are of great help in our work.”
