The children's home #5 has sheltered 91 kids ranging in age from 2 to 18 years. Three fourths of them are considered social orphans, i.e. their parents are alive, but deprived of parental rights.
During our visit we got acquainted with many inmates, a little boy Dima among them. The book "Biblical Stories" caught his eye. He ensconced in an armchair and began to look over it. It was long ago that his parents last visited him, but the boy is incessantly dreaming of a return home. We hope that the richly illustrated books will quicken his interest in the Bible, and help him to be cheerful and lively.
Children from the Sunday School of the Vesnyanka Cathedral are frequent visitors to the children's home. Very young themselves, they hold Bible lessons nevertheless, telling the orphans the stories about Jesus Christ and biblical heroes of faith. Our literature will be of great help to them.
Our next trip was made to the children's home # 7 housing 103 kids. After we had unloaded he literature, two girls, Nastya and Tanya, came up to us and asked for some book to read. Their lessons had been over, but they had to stay indoors for after-school activities. The girls chose "Opening the Bible", a book well stored with information and pictures. Nastya once lived in the nearby house, but her mother started drinking heavily after the father had died, and ultimately the girl found herself in this children's home.
Her friend Tanya was taken there together with her two brothers, Sergey and Yura, because their parents have been counted incapable of bringing up the kids. Left to themselves, the brothers had been on the downward path, squandering study time, and inhaling glue. Now, that they are under the care of devoted nurses and teachers, and have received an opportunity of reading Christian books, they will change for the better. Let's pray for the kids to be healed by God's love, as they, so young, have been hurt so deeply.
We visited the children’s home #13 sheltering hard-of-hearing kids. Many of them are suffering from the psychological problems entailed by their inferiority. Sonya Dalgaard (on the photo) from the Danish Bible Society was with us. She presented a book entitled “Bible Stories” illustrated by Danish author Esben Hanefelt Cristensen. The children were so glad to receive such a richly illustrated book.
According to Galina Gurbo the Head of this establishment, the coloring book “God’s World Around Us” will be of considerable help, as they both show biblical subjects and contribute to the development of mental process of the children. Besides, the staff of the children's home will read the Christian books themselves, and we believe God will work through that in their hearts too.
Minsk social pedagogical center functions as a social establishment and an orphanage. Combining those two facets of social activity, the staff is doing prophylactic work among under-age alcoholics and drug addicts. Holding studies in groups and visiting families of the children are among their responsibilities. There are 18 children in the 3-16 age bracket at this social center.
Zinayida Nesterenko (photo), the center’s director, and her team make every effort to help the children return to their families instead of becoming inmates of children homes. It is a pity there are so many parents unwilling to bring up their own children! What a self-sacrificing work the workers of this center are doing! They are unceasing in the search for ways of helping the little inmates. Thanks to those devoted workers more than one third of the total number of the kids return back to their own families.
We brought spiritual literature and passed the books as a gift from the Bible Society to the kids. At the picture you see Valentine and Sasha. The parents of these boys are deprived of parental rights, and the workers of the center seek for a new family for them. Such children need love so badly! May the Children Bibles and Christian ABS we’ve presented them with help them to learn about God and see His love toward them.
