A day of aged people is celebrated on October 1 in our country. Seeking for making good of this opportunity the staff members of the Bible Society had made a series of trips to the homes for the old and less able.
Boarding home for the old and less able in Orsha, Vitebsk region, has housed 196 people. Valentina Dmitrijevna the inmate of the boarding home says,
“I am 73. All I have seen in my life is four walls and a bed. When I was 18 I was run over by a tram. I worked at the tram depot then. Someone, and the tram and cut both legs and hurt one arm. I’ve been here for 23 year. Before, I lived with my parents until they died. I love reading the book of Psalms in large print, maybe because there are many psalms there that afford consolation to my soul.”
Boarding home for the old and less able with mental derangement in Babinichi village, Vitebsk region, had housed 407 people. Sergey Viktorovich the director of the boarding home in Babinichi (photo on the left) says, “The inmates are very hard to deal with. I get tired morally as they all have different diseases and need individual approach and so when I come home I feel like a dish-towel. We have a large farm here, and a vacant hour is a rarity to me, but the books of the Bible Society kindled my interest especially the Good News in modern translation”.
Igor Avtukhov (photo, right) had talent for drawing and once studied at the art school in Florence, Italy, and lived in an Italian family. As time went on, his behavior became more and more inadequate. He eventually returned to Belarus and was taken to the boarding home. Now he is under observation of doctors. Igor is fond of reading, Jack London’s books among his favorite, and even though he currently showed no interest in the Scriptures, we hope that God will work in his heart, and the time will come when he takes the books we provided for the boarding home and reads the life-changing Word of God.
