Boarding home for people with mental disorders, Schuchin

The establishment was founded in 1969. Initially, it functioned as home for the old, but in 1987 it was transformed into boarding home for people of unsound mind with capacity for 320 patients. Of them, 75 patients are absolutely helpless and unable to exercise self care.

Cross on the way to the boarding home. Such crosses are traditional in many places of Belarusian countryside.

Agrippina Semionauna, 80 (photo, right). She got to the boarding home 15 years ago. Before, she was engaged in agriculture and did hard works. She brought up three children, but their visits are very rare. Her husband died long ago. Her youngest daughter tried to persuade her into moving into her apartment, but Agrippina didn’t want to saddle her daughter and so she has decided to stay at the boarding home.

Boris, 36 (photo, left). He was taken to the boarding home 14 years ago. He is a psychoneurotic. He has nine brothers and a sister. He was born when his mother served her term in prison. Then his mother gave the child to children’s home. Boris didn’t know anything about his relatives for a long time, but he kept longing for a family and began to hunt out them. Boris found the addresses of his sister and several brothers, but they all rejected him and no one comes to see him.

Nickolai Gavrilovich, 70 (photo, right). His father died right after the war, and it was his mother and grandmother who brought him up. The mother fostered his interest in reading, and she cared for him until she died in 1995. Since then he has lived at the boarding home, and now he has an opportunity to read the Bible.
