Trip to the village of Yurovichi

The village of Yurovichi, a homeland of a famous Belarusian writer Ivan Melezh, is situated in the area of radioactive contamination. As a reminder of it, a memorial sign was erected in commemoration 22nd anniversary of the catastrophe (photo, right).

The house where Ivan Melezh had once lived was rearranged to be a museum (photo, left), and now the exhibits are displayed to the public.

The Bible Society gave the set of the literature to the museum so that visitors could get acquainted with the Scriptures (photo, right).

Yurovichi school too received the set of Christian literature from the Bible Society. Vice-principal of the school Yelena Ivanovna (photo, left) says, “Many people have left these places after the accident, but now things have settled down. There are many school children here, and spiritual literature will be a great help to us in our work”.

At the hospital in Yurovichi there are special beds assigned for aged women who are provided with food and care. Mariya Tarasovna (72) (photo, left) is childless. She is not able to care for herself and needs help. She is fond of reading and takes in newspapers. She was pleasantly surprised at the Holy Gospel book in large print that we presented her with. The life of Mariya Tarasovna was full of difficulties. Chernobyl catastrophe affected her health, but we hope that the Word of God will strengthen her and renew her spiritually.

The staff of the local culture center in Yurovichi showed a vivid interest in the spiritual literature from the Bible Society. The staff member of the cultural center Vera Alexandrovna (photo, right) said when looking through the books, “We have many people coming to us, and it would be great to have such literature in our library in order to make it available to them all”.
